one among a number of other semiotic systems (lyons, 1981: 3-11). this emphasis follows the lead of saussure (1916: 33) in a concern to see language in the context of other communication frameworks. chomsky gives a rather formal definition in 1957: from now on i will consider a language to be a set (finite or infinite) of sentences, each finite in length and constructed out of a finite set of elements.
