in 1909, the founder of phraseology as independent linguistic discipline charles bally, in the work “traite de stylistique francaise”. in 1936 s.abakumov categorized phraseological units according to the structure, semantic unity and etymology. however, many linguists claimed his classification unsuccessful because "it does not take into account all the existing variety of phraseological units – on the one hand, and does not maintain a single principle of division - on the other” [shansky, 1985]. v.vinogradov, the founder of the largest scientific school in russian linguistics, proposed one of the most famous and widely used classifications of phraseological units in linguistics from the point of view of semantic fusion. according to vinogradov’s classification, phraseological units can be categorized as per their semantic (degree of motivation) and structural (ability to perform the same syntactic functions) features: – phraseological combinations – word-groups with obvious meaning i.e. the meaning of the expression can be …
