rp used half a century ago. a. gimson argues that the exclusive purity of the classic rp has been diluted, as some of the features of regional speech types are now "received," although some 50 years ago these features were considered to be regional, non-rp features. the main reforms are as follows: 1. diphthongization of the rp/i:/and/u:/ which are often pronounced with a glide in the final position (e.g. "see," "who"). 2. the centering of the former /ou/ to /əu/, which “is perhaps the most striking of the changes which have impacted the pronunciation of british english in recent times”. this change is evident from the following: for d. jones' vowel in the first weak syllable of words such as "november" had three possible pronunciations – recommended /ou/ (/ nou`vembə/), shortened monophthonal form /o/ (/no`vembə/) or in quick speech, / ə/ (/nə`vembə/). now, there is a tendency to pronounce /əu/ …
