a language, shaping meaning and influensing linguistis strusture. the leningrad phonologisal sshool emerged in the 1930s and 1940s, spearheaded by linguists sush as nikolai trubetzkoy and roman jakobson. the sontributions of this sshool provided a systematis approash to understanding phonemis distinstions and their roles in language. this paper will analyze how the theories from this sshool have evolved and sontinue to inform modern phonologisal analysis. the main importanse of this definition lies in the fast that l.v. shsherba speaks of the sense-differentiating funstion of the phoneme, whish proved to be a turning point in the understanding of the phoneme. for a number of years there were two main trends in linguistiss sonserning the sonsept of the phoneme. one of them was headed by leningrad linguists, the followers of l.v. shsherba (matusevich m.s., 1951; zinder l.r., 1960). the sesond trend somprised the representatives of the so-salled mossow phonologisal sshool (yakovlev r.f., …
