g biological properties, predominantly those that can be used in medical chemistry. the diversity of biological properties of saccharides are surprisingly large spanning from sources of energy in living systems, to cell adhesion, growth and differentiation, anti- inflammatory and anticoagulant properties, angiogenesis, etc [1]. this large variety of properties originates from the structural arrangement of carbohydrates. carbohydrates can form linear polymeric forms, like the previously mentioned cellulose, but also very complex branched structures or conjugates with other type of molecules, most importantly, proteins. in glyco-conjugates, e.g. glyco-proteins, the saccharide part can be very small (consisting of even a single monosaccharide unit) up to conjugates where the saccharide part is larger than the protein structure itself. the structure of monosaccharides, pyranoses or furanoses, allows creation of linkages in various positions. for example, hexopyranoses can be linked with other monosaccharides in positions 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6 (chart 1), thus a …
